Two Tips for Beginner Gardeners

Vickie Myers

Here are two tips to follow if you've taken an interest in gardening.

Always keep a spare bag of soil in your garden shed

It's important to always keep an extra bag of soil in your garden shed. There are a number of reasons why you should do this. Firstly, if your garden ever floods or is subjected to hurricane-force winds, some of the top layers of the soil in which your plants are located could either wash away or get blown away. If or when this happens, the speed with which you replace this soil will be one of the main factors that will determine if the affected plants survive; if there is not enough soil to cover their roots or to allow nutrients to travel into their roots, they could start to die within a day or so.

If you have a bag of soil on hand, you can replenish the top layer as soon as the bad weather dies down, and your plants will stand a better chance of survival than if you had to drive to a supermarket or garden centre to purchase some soil and then drive home again before you could do this task. Secondly, having spare soil on hand will mean that whenever you have a spare moment and feel like planting some seeds in a plant pot, you can do so on a whim. Making this type of small gardening task as easy as possible for yourself will increase the chances of you gradually creating a lovely garden for yourself.

Only invest in high-quality gardening tools after you've determined your preferred style of gardening

Whilst a spare bag of soil is something you will always be able to find a use for, you should take a more cautious approach when purchasing high-end gardening tools and try to avoid investing in expensive ones until you've learned about what plants you like and what gardening tasks you find yourself doing most often. This will ensure that you don't waste money on costly tools that you will hardly ever use.

If for example, you discover that you prefer the look and the convenience of planting flowers in pots rather than in flowerbeds, then you probably don't need an expensive, large spade that is needed for digging into large expanses of soil and will instead be able to make do with a small hand trowel when planting seeds or seedlings in your planters.

Talk to a soil supplier for more information.
