Some Things to Think About Before Buying a Ride-On Lawnmower

Vickie Myers

A ride-on lawnmower is a sensible option for anyone who has a large area to look after or has mobility problems. However, the range of machines available can seem overwhelming. Here are some things to think about when choosing a mower.

Comfort

Firstly, you will need to consider how comfortable the mower is to ride. The seat should be cushioned and should have some support for your back; you may want an adjustable one. You will also need to make sure that the pedals and controls are within easy reach and that the steering wheel is at a comfortable height. No matter how good the mower is, you should ensure that you will not experience back strain or discomfort whenever you try to use it.

Cutting deck

It is not necessarily true that the bigger the cutting deck, the better. If you have a very uneven lawn with plenty of obstacles, you may do better with a smaller deck, which will be more manoeuvrable and less likely to dig in to the lawn. A larger deck will also require a bigger engine and will consume more fuel. Four blades will usually be better than two, and you should also make sure that the blades will be able to cut to the height that you require.

Grass collection

You should also consider what happens to the cuttings. The mower may discharge them to the side or rear, or you could get one with a catcher, although this will need a more powerful engine to power the fan that directs the cuttings into the catcher. Some models come with a detachable catcher that gives you the best of both worlds. You can also buy a mower that mulches the cuttings, chopping them up finely before discharging them back onto the grass.

Safety

You should also remember that a ride-on mower can be a dangerous piece of equipment. You should make sure at the very least that it has guards to protect you from the blades. A cut-off switch that automatically stops the blades when you get off the seat is also a good idea, as is a reverse override switch that stops cutting when you put the mower into reverse.

A ride-on mower is a big investment that you should not make without doing your research. Take your time to make the right choice, and your mower should give you perfect results.
